Shasta Soft Drink, a West Coast Tradition

Shasta dates back to 1899, when the company was a mineral water business situated at the base of the iconic Mt. Shasta in California. Shasta focused on mineral water sourced from Shasta Springs, selling bottled water exclusively until 1931, when they introduced their first soft drink, Shasta ginger ale.

For the next several decades, Shasta was primarily sold as a mixer for cocktails, featuring club soda, ginger ale and mineral water. In the 1950s, Shasta expanded their product line to include new flavors and lower calorie soft drinks. They shifted from bottling to canning beverages, selling directly to retailers in wholesale prices—these innovations effectively changed the soft drink industry forever. By 1960, Shasta soft drink was well-known throughout the Western U.S.
